January is almost over and with that the beginning of Fun Family Events in Charleston and Summerville!! Here are a few of my top pics for the upcoming months. Hope to see you at some of them.

Boat Show & Sale

Location:  The Charleston Area Convention Center and Coliseum
Charleston, South Carolina
Date: January 23-25, 2009
Contact #: (864) 250-9713

For the past 27 years, this has been a very popular event in Charleston for all those that love boating!  Last year 10,140 people attended and they are expecting more this year.  If you are a boating enthusiast, you will definitely enjoy this show which features over 90 boat lines, the latest in marine accessories, products and services.

Lowcountry Oyster Festival

Location: Boone Hall Plantation
Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
Date: January 25, 2009
Price: $8 (Pre Event Price, $10 at the gate, kids 10 and under admitted free)

If the weather decides to warm up, this will be a fun event to bring the family to at Boone Hall. Hosted by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, there will be 65,000 pounds of oysters and lots of other yummy food to choose from the area’s other popular restaurants. Activities will include the “Oyster Shucking Contest”, the “Oyster Eating Contest” and local live entertainment. The kids have their own children’s area with lots of fun things for them to stay happy and entertained. You can buy your oysters buy the bucket but make sure to bring your own knife or you will have to purchase them there. Have a great time!

Southeastern Wildlife Expo

Location: Downtown Charleston, SC
Date: February 13-15, 2009

This is one of my favorite events of the year in Charleston. There are wildlife exhibits all over Charleston, mostly in the historic district. Over 40,000 people attend and there are over 500 exhibitors. There is everything from animal presentations (falconry and such) to art sculptures to
lectures on wildlife conservation. The kids will love the animals and enjoy learning as well!

Flowertown Festival

Location: Downtown Summerville, SC
Date: April 3-5, 2009

This one is only a few blocks from my home in Summerville, and has been one of my family’s favorites ever since my children were very little. With over 200 unique vendors showing off their wares, the whole town out to meet and greet, delicious food to be had…it’s a great way to spend the weekend. I’ll see you there.

Cooper River Bridge Run

Location: Charleston, SC
Date: April 4, 2009
Contact#:(843) 937-4183
Start Time: 8am

Can’t say I’ve ever run in this, but it is a local tradition that dates back to the 70’s. Over 30,000 people participate in the 10-K race every year. If you don’t want to run, spectating is fun as well. Lots of fun ensues after the race is over and into the evening hours.

“Sundown on the Wando” Riverfront Music Series

Location: Children’s Park on Daniel Island on the Wando River
Dates: April, May & June (Dates to be determined)
Contact#:(843) 971-9200

Food & Kid’s entertainment starts at 5pm and the music performances kick off at 6pm. (Salsa, Jimmy Buffett tunes, MoTown…) This is a great chance to get out and enjoy some beautiful scenery, food, music and fellowship. The kids will have a great time at this.

Sculpture in the South

Location: Summerville’s Azalea Park
Dates: May 16-May17, 2009

Enjoy a day of visiting with over 35 renowned artists from all over the US and viewing their art sculptures in the park.  My favorite are the wildlife exhibits/sculptures. If you love art, you don’t want to miss this in Summerville.
