The Best Friend of Charleston railroad locomotive!  This amazing piece of history has traveled all over the USA and been on display.  On Wednesday this past week, it graced our beautiful town of Summerville, SC!

Widely acclaimed to be the first steam- powered locomotive completely built in the United States, the Best Friend of Charleston is a piece of our history.  The train was built for the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company by the West Point Foundry of New York in 1830.

It was nicknamed the Best Friend of Charleston because it was a regular passenger train used along a six-mile stretch in Charleston, SC.  At that time, it was the quickest way for people to travel.  The only way to travel at a faster pace was on horseback.

This piece of our history was a fun addition to Downtown Summerville during our Fall celebrations including Scarecrows on The Square.

Yet another reason that living in Summerville is great!  If you are thinking of moving to Summerville and would like to know more about Summerville, SC Real Estate or Homes for Sale in Summerville please don’t hesitate to call or email me at Foster@HomesofSummerville.com.

  1. The Downtown area of Charleston SC is always being a subject of fun and happening with its fabulous events. The Real Estate, resorts and beach views, always attracts me. Like every year, I would like to enjoy my vacation in somewhere near to the beach area.
