Fun Summer Ideas for kids in Charleston, SC

Are you looking for fun, free / cheap summer activities in Charleston, SC  to do as a family this summer?  My wife and I raised four children in Summerville, SC so finding fun, educational, and cheap ideas was always at the top of our list. Now we have five grandchildren and another one due in a month, so we still are always on the lookout!  It is not hard to find fun summer ideas for the kids when you live in the Charleston area, but here are some of our favorites!

Cheap Fun Activities for Kids in Charleston

Beach-  This is a no brainer for those of us that live here, but it has to be said!  I always said that the beach was the best babysitter out there. The kids would play, create and just relax for hours at the beach. Some of our best memories as a family and now with our grandkids are hours spent at the Isle of Palms.  That’s our beach of choice for kids, but get out there and explore. Find which one fits your family. If you go to the IOP, just remember to park 4 feet off the street so you don’t get a ticket! Chick-Fil-A – This is always a treat and a favorite place to frequent with the kids. I thought it was worth mentioning, because this Friday, July 11th is Cow Appreciation Day. If you dress up the kids and yourself as cows, you get free food!! So…make it an event and do it!  Cut out some black spots, stick them on a white tee-shirt, make some cow ears with your kids and your golden.  This is cheap fun and a great way to make a memory.   July 11th is Cow Appreciation Day

Fort Moultrie – The lesser known fort that doesn’t get the attention of Fort Sumter is a lot of fun too! Another plus is that you don’t have to pay for the water taxi! My kids loved exploring the tunnels and singing and making their voices echo.  If you have history lovers, or even if you don’t, they will like this adventure. GO!

Outdoor Movie – Go see an Outdoor Movie as a Family! Two options are close by, Johns Island shows movie every week and Wannamaker Park shows them every couple of weeks. Lots of fun family movies are going to be shown throughout the summer.  Nothing says summertime like eating outdoors, enjoying a fun movie as a family!

  1. Outdoor Movie on Johns Island   – Grab a beach chair or blanket, pack a picnic and head to the Village Green at Freshfields Village for Starlight Cinema, a free outdoor movies series. Beginning May 28, Starlight Cinema will take place every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. until August 27.
  2.  Wannamaker Park  Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket, and join us for a movie night under the stars. Movies begin just after sunset, around 8pm.  Next one is July 12th, The Little Mermaid!

Get Wet!  Everyone knows it is HOT in Charleston this time of year, so head over to the Wannamaker Park Splash Pad to cool down. The Wannamaker Park Splash Pad  is a great place for the younger crowd (and not so young) to cool off and have fun in the sprinklers.  It’s only $1/person. Makes for a fun morning. Bring a picnic lunch and then head home for nap time! 🙂

Fun Things to do in Summerville & Charleston SC

For my most up to date ideas, visit my latest post on Fun ideas to do with children in Charleston and Summerville.

May is almost here and the beautiful weather is still here as well. With an average high of 83 and low of 59, May is one of the nicest months to sight see and enjoy the outdoors of Summerville and Charleston!  So… in honor of one of my favorite months, here is a list of fun things to do during the month of May with your families. If you are thinking of relocating to Charleston or relocating to Summerville, let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see  you in our town.

Piccolo Spoleto: May 23-June 8

This festival piggy backs on the famous Spoleto Festival in Charleston and offers a fun venue of events for the family for no charge or very reasonable rates.  You will find block parties with beach music, reggae, and other types of music on weekend nights.  Outdoor craft fairs and demonstrations, professional story tellers, family film fest, Memorial Day concert in Marion Square, and much more is offered.

Spoleto USA: May 23-June 8

Spoleto is the world famous arts festival which is hosted every year by the city of Charleston.  Full of arts, culture and drama, this festival has some of the finest artists in all different fields perform.  The operas this year are going to be Amistad and La Cenerentola. My all time favorite is the Westminster Choir and any of their performances.  I highly recommend you get to one of their concerts!

Middleton Plantation

My children grew up visiting this beautiful plantation every spring with my mother, who is now in her 80’s.  It is a wonderful experience and lots of fun for everyone.  Animals roam the area, beautifully manicured gardens are breathtaking, costumed interpreters portray life during the pre Civil War era.  Last time I visited, Children were $5 and Adults were $25.

Picnic on the Beach:

It’s still a little too chilly to go swimming. (At least for me.) However, the beaches are great for a Saturday picnic, game of handball, and a nice walk.  Isle of Palms is the beach I always recommend, plenty of public beach access and a great family beach.

Sculpture in the South May 17-18

Located in Azalea Park in Summerville, Sculpture in the South is a great exhibition and outdoor arts event that features top scultors from all over the US.  It’s a fun day to spend talking to artists, seeing beautiful sculptures and enjoying the beauty of Azalea Park. I believe there may be a small entrance fee.

Wannamaker Park & Whirlin Waters

The kids will love a day at North CharlestonWannamakerCountyPark!  With over 1,015 acres of beautiful woodlands and wetlands, wonderful bike trails, picnic sites with grills, playgrounds, pedal boats and kayaks and the very popular water park-this is an amazing park!  The water park re-opens May 3rd, so surprise your kids and make a day of it! 🙂

Feed the Ducks:

This seems simple, but if you have small children, this is always a great thing to do with them to help pass the time.  The pond in Gadsden off of Old Postern Road (in downtown Summerville) is a great one with a lot of ducks and geese on most days.

Summerville DREAM Outdoor Concert: May 15 6:30pm

The Summerville DREAM team is hosting a free outdoor concert on Thursday, May 15th on the lawn of downtown Summerville.  I would bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the concert!  The featured musicians are the  Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble.  According to the DREAM website,  “Heritage Aire blends a contemporary musical approach with traditional Celtic music style to create a stunning musical tapestry. The members of Heritage Aire perform on traditional instruments such as the Irish flute, tin whistles, button accordion, and bodhran. They also employ modern instruments like the acoustic guitar and clarinet to achieve their unique sound.”  Sounds fun to me!

As I hear of more things, I’ll make sure to add them, but I hope this is helpful and fun for you in the month ahead.  Let me know about your fun adventures! Foster@HomesofSummerville.com
